Joseph Markley; the grandfather of Conrad, emigrated from Germany many years ago, and settled in Pennsylvania. He was the father of fourteen children, twelve sons and two daughters. Jonathan Markley, the fifth child, moved to Ohio about the year 1815, and settled in Richland County, now Ashland County, and lived there until the fall of 1834, when he moved to Illinois and settled in Fulton County. His family consisted of wife and eight children; they had three children born after they came to Illinois. Jonathan Markley died in Ellisville, in the year 1842. Conrad Markley was 17 years old when his father came to Illinois. He lived with his father until the spring of 1842, when, on 31st day of March, 1842, he married Miss Ruth Foster, the daughter of Benjamin Foster, one of the proprietors of Fairview Town, and died in 1839. Conrad Markley settled on section two, in Deerfleld Township, in the year 1847, where he has resided ever since, engaged in farming and raising stock. Conrad has frequently held local office in his township, and is Supervisor of his township at the present time. He is the father of ten children, seven boys and three girls -- two dead, two married, six alive and at home. Conrad has many warm friends. He has a good farm under a high state of cultivation; and is a No. 1 farmer. Mrs. Markley, the mother of Conrad, is still alive; she resides in Frontier, Kansas, on Solomon River, and is in the seventieth year of her age.
